Home Remedies – Pure Lime Juice to stop Nausea and Vomiting

23 Apr

Sorry that we’re talking about these unsightly symptoms… but if we like to eat, sometimes, unfortunately we’ll eat something that does not agrees with us. It’s life…

I have found that drinking the pure juice of 1-2 limes when I have nausea helps ease the stomach in such a way that it settles in a little while. This is partly the reason why I always like to have limes and lemons in my kitchen.

Lemons and limes are acidic in the outside world… but when ingested, they alkalinize the blood and eases any upset stomach symptom. I am no scientist, but I have used this remedy many more times than I would like to admit. And it works. I squeeze the juice out of the fruit and drink it like a shot – all at once.

Lime juice is also good to stop diarrhea. If by any chance you have “the runs” and they won’t stop… try drinking a shot of lime juice to see if you feel better. I have a friend that took a colon cleansing tea… and afterwards she would not stop going to the bathroom. She was getting worried and drank some lime juice and “the runs” stopped. It’s an amazing remedy…

Hope you never have to use it. But if you do, now you know a natural way, right??

Celery Lime Juice

15 Jun

If you thought Celery Pineapple juice was out there… let me give you another one.

Celery juice sound weird to many people, but it’s really, really good. It has many beneficial properties, and according to Hippocrates, the father of medicine, it “calms the nerve”… which is probably why was given to me as a treatment. Among its benefits are:

1. Eating celery will reduce high blood pressure and give the effect of calmness.

2. Celery clears uric acid from painful joints and may help the treatment of arthritis and rheumatic problems.

3. Celery also helps the kidney an acts an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Even with all its benefits, celery could be a bit strong for certain people, so I was recommended to take it with lemon or lime to ease it into your system.

My sister was skeptical at first, and even though I don’t think she’ll be making this anytime soon… but I believe she was pleasantly surprised when I gave it to try. I enjoy a glass of this everyday now as part of a treatment, but I believe it will be part of my juice repertoire from now on.

CELERY LIME JUICE

1 stalk of celery, chopped finely
The juice of ½ a lime
1 cup of cold water
Drizzle of agave nectar or honey
Ice cube – optional
  1. In a blender or Magic Bullet add all ingredients and blend well.
  2. Strain the juice using a fine mesh sieve to get rid of all the pulp.

How I squeeze the juice out of a lemon

4 Oct

I use a lot of lemons in my cooking…  I just love lemon juice drizzled over fried eggplants, as part of a dressing or even to marinate tofu.

I never thought the way I squeeze the juice from the lemon was anything special, but watching so much food shows on TV I noticed no one on TV does it the way I do.  The only person that does something similar is Anne Burrell.  So I want to share it with you to maybe help you out getting as much juice out of your lemons.

HOW I SQUEEZE THE JUICE OUT OF A LEMON

1 lemon half
Fork

  1. To get the most juice out of your lemon half, I insert the tines of a fork in the lemon pulp and squeeze away.
  2. I change the positioning of the fork so I can squeeze as much juice as possible out of the half I am working with.

Anne Burrell sticks the tip of a knife inside the pulp, but I think that is a bit dangerous.  I was taught to do this when I was little by my dad.  So this is a tried and true method that works with all types of lemons.  And I’ve noticed that on yellow American lemons, it’s best if you take some of the rind off to make the pith more pliable and helps get more juice out.

Hope this new technique will help you get as much juice out of your lemons as possible.  Especially when drizzling lemon juice on food at the table.

Hummus

30 Aug

There used to be a time when people paid me money for this Hummus…  Annie Mariel, Laura, Ana Yolanda, Angie, Denisse, Elinor, Lillian – they all have sung the praises of this hummus recipe. That’s why I had not shared it as such in this blog.  Now that I am sort of retired from the pseudo-catering business, I feel comfortable posting it here.

It’s funny that I do not like to eat beans necessarily, but I learned to love hummus.  My version is special because I like it lemony…  to me this is what makes this recipe better than those store-bought hummus.  Hope you learn or teach someone  to love legumes by making this recipe…

HUMMUS

1 can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans – I still have not been able to figure out how to make the garbanzo beans from scratch
1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese
juice of one lime
about 1/2 cup of olive oil – enough to make the mixture as creamy as possible
1 clove of garlic, minced
¼ cup of water, optional
salt and pepper to taste
a dash of paprika

I usually make this recipe eye-balling all the ingredients…  so this is my best attempt to give your measurements and proportions.

  1. Rinse the garbanzo beans.
  2. Place garbanzo beans, cheese, garlic, lime juice salt, pepper, paprika and some of the olive oil in a food processor.
  3. Pulse until the mixture is creamy.  If the mixture is not as creamy as it should be, add the water and a bit more olive oil in small increments until you reach the texture you seek.

A friend and ex-neighbor from Israel told me the lemony kick is very much in line with the way they make hummus in Israel.  I remember eating a lot of hummus in Israel and it was all delicious!!!!

Beet and Lime Juice

26 Dec

I remember the first time I tasted this beet and lime juice.  To me, it was the closest thing possible to what I remembered how Kool-aid tasted.  And it’s super easy and economical to make…  It also helps when you need to strengthen your levels of hemoglobin.

Try it…

 beet-juice

BEET AND LIME JUICE

1 beet, chopped in small pieces
½ cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
¾ cup of brown sugar
Enough water to reach 1 gallon

  1. You take the beet pieces and mix them with enough water to blend in a blender.  Blend as fast as your blender will go.  Pass the blended mixture thru a sieve.
  2. Take the remainder beet from the sieve and blend again with more water.  Pass thru the sieve again and try to get as much liquid as possible.  Add the lime juice.
  3. Blend the sugar with more water and pass thru the sieve also.  This will ensure there will not be any hard pieces of sugar in your juice.
  4. Mix the remainder water and mix well.

Serve well chilled.

This juice is super easy to make, but it’s just a bit messy.  Look at my hands how they ended up.  But don’t worry, with a few hand washings, they’ll come back to normal.  This is also a great way to introduce kids to beets.
